Day in the Life of a Homesteader: A Hands-On Survival Challenge

Can You Survive a Day on the Frontier?

From sunrise to sunset… every decision mattered.

Day in the Life of a Homesteader is an immersive, high-energy relay race that transforms history into a fast-paced survival experience. Participants don’t just learn about homesteaders—they become them.

Through teamwork, problem-solving, and hands-on challenges, students experience the real work, risks, and responsibilities of daily life on the frontier.

This isn’t a game.

This is survival.

🌾 What Is This Program?

This interactive program places participants into “homestead families,” where they must work together to complete the essential tasks required to survive a single day on the prairie.

Each team rotates through a series of real-life homesteading challenges, racing against time—and sometimes each other—to:

  • Secure food
  • Haul water
  • Build shelter
  • Complete daily chores
  • Respond to unexpected dangers

Every task is based on historical realities, giving participants a powerful understanding of what it truly took to live under the Homestead Act.

🏃‍♂️ The Relay Race Experience

This program is built as a rotating challenge relay, keeping all participants actively engaged from start to finish.

Each station represents a critical part of a homesteader’s day:

💧 Water Haul Challenge

Water was life—and it wasn’t easy to get.
Participants must carefully transport water without spilling, learning just how difficult daily survival tasks could be.

🪵 Wood & Fuel Run

No wood meant no heat… and no cooking.
Teams race to gather and transport fuel, balancing speed with control.

🏠 Shelter & Survival Build

Using limited materials, teams must create a basic structure strong enough to “withstand” prairie conditions.

🌾 Food & Supply Relay

Gathering food wasn’t guaranteed.
Participants must complete tasks to earn supplies and keep their “family” going.

⚠️ Homestead Hazard Cards

Just like real homesteaders, participants face the unexpected:

  • Sudden storms
  • Illness
  • Equipment failure
  • Crop loss

Every decision matters—and consequences are real within the game.

🧠 Powerful Educational Impact

  • Daily life under the Homestead Act
  • The physical demands of frontier survival
  • The importance of teamwork and cooperation

  • Cause and effect in historical settings
